YOUR GO-TO LABOUR TENS MACHINE GUIDE
Using a TENS Machine During Labour
A TENS machine is a gentle, drug-free pain relief option that many mums choose to use during labour. It works by sending small electrical pulses through pads placed on your back, helping to reduce pain signals and support your body’s natural coping responses.
Many women love TENS because it gives them control, can be used early in labour, and doesn’t affect their baby.
How Can a TENS Machine Help?
-
Helps block pain signals travelling to the brain
-
Encourages the release of endorphins (your body’s natural pain relievers)
-
Allows you to stay active and in control
-
Can be used at home, in hospital, or at a birth centre
-
Safe for both mum and baby when used correctly
When Should I Start Using My TENS Machine?
For best results, we recommend starting your TENS machine early in labour, as soon as contractions begin or when you notice a consistent lower-back ache.
Starting early helps your body build up endorphins gradually, which can make the TENS feel more effective as labour progresses. It can be especially helpful for:
-
Early labour
-
Long labours
-
Back labour
How to Set Up Your TENS Machine
Pad Placement
Pads are placed on your back, not on your belly.
A common placement is:
-
Two pads on either side of your spine, just above your waist
-
Two pads slightly higher on your mid-back
(Always follow the placement guide provided with your machine.)
Using TENS During Contractions
-
Keep the machine running continuously at a low, comfortable level
-
As a contraction begins, increase the intensity or press the boost button
-
Reduce the intensity again once the contraction eases
The sensation should feel strong but comfortable — never painful.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of TENS
-
Practice using the machine before labour so it feels familiar
-
Stay upright and mobile where possible
-
Combine TENS with breathing, movement, massage or visualisation
-
Ask your birth partner to help adjust the settings during contractions
Is TENS Safe to Use During Labour?
Yes — TENS machines are considered safe for use during labour and do not interfere with your baby or with contractions.
TENS should not be used:
-
If you have a pacemaker
-
If you have epilepsy (unless approved by your doctor)
-
On broken or irritated skin
-
In water (remove before showering or bathing)
If you’re unsure, always check with your midwife or healthcare provider.
Can I Use Other Pain Relief With TENS?
Absolutely. TENS can be used alongside:
-
Gas and air
-
Movement and positioning
-
Massage and other comfort measures
Many mums choose TENS as their first option and then decide if they’d like additional pain relief later — there’s no right or wrong choice.
A Gentle Reminder
